How is it your brain works perfectly, until you get an exam?


Exam and test anxiety is disabling and defies all logic. It doesn't matter how long you study for, how much you practice, or what you know, none of this helps when your mind goes blank, you can't remember anything and nothing makes sense. 


Most people focus on the wrong thing when they prepare (content). Whilst it is important to know your stuff, all the knowledge and tutoring in the world count for nothing if you don't do the one thing that actually makes the difference to acing your test or interview - which is, the right state of mind and maintaining it no matter what.


The nature of the nervous system is such that it forms associations that last. Some of them are useful and some, unfortunately, are not. Exam, test and interview anxiety falls into this last category. These associations are triggered outside of our conscious awareness - which is why they cannot be changed through logic.


In other words, the feelings of fear and panic are a normal and healthy response.  Your brain is just got a bit muddled and mistakenly identified tests, exams, and interviews as life-threatening.  The response is to shut down all non-essential functions (like remembering when Henry V died and how to do advanced algebra) and preparing your body to fight or run away or freezing and playing dead.  The good news is that this can be changed. FAST.
